WHAT IS AN EYE LIFT?

An eye lift (blepharoplasty) is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of the eyelids. This surgery can be performed on either the upper and lower lids, or both.  Eye lift surgery is used to treat the following:

  • Bags under the eye
  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid
  • Excess fatty deposits that appear as ‘puffiness’ in the eyelids
  • Drooping lower eyelids that reveal white space below the iris
  • Loose or sagging skin that may create folds, impairing vision
  • Loose or sagging skin that disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid

WHY HAVE EYE LIFT SURGERY?

With time, as one ages, skin begins to lose its elasticity, and the facial tissues begin to lose volume. This can lead to lose skin sagging above or below the eye lids. While this is a natural symptom of aging, an eye lift surgery is an option to consider for those patients who want to improve the appearance of his or her eyelids. Eye lift surgery is also helpful for eliminating any functional problems one may be experiencing. Eye lift surgery can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes.

HOW DOES THE PROCESS WORK?

Eye lift surgery can be performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Dr. Ocampo will determine which is best suited for each individual patient. Incision lines are designed so that any scars may be concealed within natural structures of the eyelid area. For corrections to the upper eyelid, Dr. Ocampo will create an incision within the natural crease to remove the fat deposits, tighten muscles, and remove excess skin. For corrections to the lower eyelid, Dr. Ocampo will create an incision right below the lower lash line to remove the fat deposits, tighten muscles, and remove excess skin. As an alternate technique, Dr. Ocampo may create a transconjunctival incision, which is on the inside of the lower eyelid, in order to redistribute excess fat; no skin is removed in this technique. Eyelid incisions can be closed with removable sutures, skin adhesives, or surgical tape. Swelling and brusing is normal; recovery will reveal a better-defined eyelid and rejuvenated appearance. Dr. Ocampo will discuss and determine the individualized plan for each patient.
