WHAT IS BREAT RECONSTRUCTION?

Breast reconstructive surgery is a multi step procedure, typically following a mastectomy (removal of the breast due to breast cancer), in order to restore the breast to normal appearance, size, and shape.  This reconstructive surgery is for rebuilding the breast. Breast reconstruction does not restore the exact same sensations as the original breast; it is a surgery to restore the appearance.

WHY HAVE BREAST RECONSTRUCTION?

After undergoing mastectomy to remove breast cancer, many patients wish to restore the appearance of their breasts. Breast reconstruction can be performed to only one breast, or to both, depending on the patient’s affected areas. Many patients wish to restore the appearance of their breasts following a mastectomy.

HOW DOES THE PROCESS WORK?

Breast reconstruction is performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Ocampo will determine best procedures for each individual patient. Depending on the type and extent of breast cancer treatment (radiation or mastectomy), the underlying tissue may be affected. Muscle, fat, and skin may need to be repositioned in order to hold a breast implant (flap technique). Tissue expansion will stretch the healthy skin in order to provide support.  Dr. Ocampo will discuss in full, the options and steps for each individual patient during consultation. For some patients, breast implants may be the best option, while other may only require flap techniques. Dr. Ocampo will determine the very best procedure, tailored to each individual patient.
